众所周知，美国大学申请材料分成两大类：硬性材料和软性材料，硬性材料包括高中成绩、托福、SAT或ACT成绩等，软性材料即文书，包括个人陈述、推荐信、简历和美国院校命题的话题作文，也就是我们所说的essay。Essay可谓是美国大学最看重的申请材料之一，同学们可以通过essay突出自己的实力而让自己在众多申请者中脱颖而出。
今年2月6日，The Common Application网站（美国本科通用申请系统）发布了2017-2018年的申请文书题目，较2016-2017年的题目有较大变动。根据The Common Applicaiton 108所成员高校的反馈和5000多人的投票做出了此次变动，其中学生意见占了59%。更新的essay题目中有两个题目没有改变，修改了原来的三个题目，并加入了两个新题目，作文的字数没有改变，依然是650字。
那就让我们来看看2017-2018通用申请系统的文书题目：
1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. [不变]
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? [修改]
3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? [修改]
4. Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma – anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution. [不变]
5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. [修改]
6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? [新增]
7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. [新增]
